MAKUA BEACH FAMILY SESSION
Yuki & Moeko traveled from Japan with two darling kiddos. They reached out looking for a Hawaii family photographer, as they wanted photos to commentate their vacation! Though they were staying in Waikiki, they wanted spectacular scenery, and I knew just the spot far from all the crowds! Makua Beach on Oahu’s west side is quite a drive, but totally worth the trek.
We started the session bright and early with mom & dad while the kiddos still slept in the car! Eventually we had to wake the babies, but they were great sports for photos, even pre-dawn. I love shooting at this location because of the huge expanse of white sand beach, and the green trees and foliage. But the best part? It’s all surrounded by the most incredible mountains at every angle.
For families with young children, especially those traveling from the U.S. mainland, I typically recommend sunrise sessions. I know it can seem daunting to have to set the alarm so early while you’re on vacation. But if you’re from the mainland, the time change works to your advantage! 6:00a is really 8 or 9a on the West Coast, depending on the time of year. Kids typically tire out by sunset after a long day of adventures, beaches, and swimming. If you schedule your session early, that leaves the entire day to explore the island, vs. having to worry about being somewhere specific in the evening. Plus, sunrise is typically less crowds and people, and on a lucky day you might have a beach all to yourselves.
I customize all of my session locations and timing with each of my clients based on your needs, so rest assured we’ll find the perfect time to fit your vacation!
