The Kawahara Family at Kailua Beach

Gahhh! I just love this little family! Megan is a fellow film photographer based in San Jose, California and her work is incredible. Seriously incredible. We originally met when I photographed her family back in 2019, while they were vacationing here on Oahu! Lucky for me, they come often, as the kids’ Grandpa calls the island home.

We choose Makapu’u Beach for their previous family session, but this time around we opted for sunrise at gorgeous Kailua Bay. Sunrise often works better for young kids, and when traveling from the mainland, the time change works to your advantage, making the early morning wakeup call feel a bit less early. We got a calm morning with soft pastel skies. Kailua is the perfect place for kiddos to run free, as the beach is flat and the water is usually tranquil.

Speaking of running free, I had a blast chasing after Maddy and Benji. I mean, how cute are they?! Benji was just a tiny baby with the sweetest, chubbiest cheeks last time and saw him, and now he’s an active toddler, zooming around and climbing all over mom and dad. His favorite is the trick where dad balances him standing in the palm of his hand! The kids are only this age once, and it was such an honor to capture these four in this special stage of their lives.
